SS Brunch with Uzuri

uzuri2

I have returned from my holiday with plenty of beautiful things to share with you including the first SS Brunch of 2016. I want to introduce to you Magdel and Emre who are the founders of Uzuri, a newly launched brand that hails from the beautiful and graceful country that is Africa. They have a wonderful vision to clothe the inner dreamer, seeker and scholar and their SS16 Capsule Collection consists of timeless and elegant staples including The Moja which is a 100% leather sandal that has been locally sourced and crafted in Africa. I hope you enjoy this SS Brunch and feel inspired to tread lightly and kindly.

What makes Uzuri African?

Our leather and fabric are sourced locally and the craftsmen with whom we partner are all South African. We aim to design first and foremost for the women of Africa. Women of different ages, races and cultures – all embracing their heritage, inspiring generations to come, seeking beauty, living boldly but also seeking qualify and functionality.

Uzuri means beauty and grace. Do you have any muses that embody these two words?

We were both raised by strong and independent women, we have the privilege of being surrounded by incredible sisters and friends who are passionate about life, who are true to themselves, who pursue their dreams fearlessly. Ladies who live their lives with intent + walk in truth, in grace, in beauty. These are the women that inspire us, the women we want to dress.

What are some of the steps implemented so that your final product is ethical and fair?

We believe in buying local, even if the result is a slight increase in prices, and in  partnering with our South African craftsmen and ladies. We are involved in every single detail. Sourcing, meeting with our craftsmen / ladies, designing + the final quality control – we ensure that all the people in the production chain is honored and fairly compensated for their contribution. Uzuri is a vision that stretches further and wider than clothes + shoes. We love our country and we want to build + dream alongside contributors to continuously invest in + grow this multifaceted country of ours.

Tell me about your creative process, is there a certain time you work, a candle you burn, a beverage that you consume?

We have both been working full time until the end of 2015, so the dream of Uzuri was pursued over weekends, late nights + early mornings. We have been drinking numerous cups of tea + dreaming of a brand that is true + bold + ethical since 1999, when we first became friends in grade 8.

What are you goals for Uzuri in 2016?

Uzuri is still in its baby shoes. We want to continue building a brand without compromises- growing holistically but remaining faithful to the childhood dream. Our aim has always been to rather deliver an ethical product, that embodies beauty and quality, than delivering a bigger, more mainstream, but less ‘hands-on’, range. Of course this has its own challenges, especially in a growing market – the effect being that Uzuri ranges are always limited editions. Moreover we will continue to follow our hearts, work hard, and shine a light on the beauty that Africa has to offer.

Black for the Summer

blacksummer1

Happy New Year! I have had a two week break from Style Smorgasbord because I wanted to recharge, reflect and redirect my energy towards the holiday season. Whilst we should aim to improve upon ourselves daily, the first day of the year is always a great ritual of self assessment that demands personal honestly and reinforces humility. Instead of coming up with new year resolutions for 2016, I decided to create a list of 101 things I want to achieve in 1001 days. You can see my list here

I would say I am a very excitable person. Thusly, I rarely wear black especially head to toe black. However, I love a good oxymoron and black in the summer is refreshingly that. I received this boater for Christmas and plan to wear it forever. The brim is wonderfully wide and perfectly practical and adding it to any outfit just makes me feel like I am on vacation somewhere tropical.

Namastay in Bed All Day

shhh1

Namastay in Bed All Day‘ – is that the general consensus among students this time of the year? Yeah … you and me both buddy … but we soldier on knowing that in a fortnight’s time, ‘school’s out, we can sleep as late as we want too’.* Here’s a little lifestyle editorial for your viewing pleasure today in collaboration with Shhh Silk. They launched their online store a few weeks ago and specialise in fancy schamncy silk pillowcases to keep your hair silky soft (the puns continue, apologies). I’m a violent thrashing sleeper who often wakes up in the morning looking like Hermoine so hopefully this will minimise the damage. My favourite thing about these pillow cases aside from how they make me feel like Eloise at New York Plaza is that they come with a zip! I haven’t found a pillowcase with a zip ever – they usually have nothing or little fussy buttons that no one has time for. For some more dreamy photographs, check out Shhh Silk’s Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Also, if you are interested in learning more about my creative process, have a look at my Pinterest Board to see the inspiration behind this editorial.

Since this is a collaboration and all, I would like to address something that has been on rotation in the social media loop in the last week. As someone who uses Instagram and the like I feel like I should talk about the whole Social-Media-Is-Evil-Essena-O’Neil-Quits-Everything matter. I use my blog and other social media channels to express myself creatively and part of this process involves collaborations with companies and brands that I am proud of. I am proud to be working with Shhh Silk because I think the fact that the founder quit her 9-5 job to pursue something she was passionate about is inspiring. I have been offered paid content before but I’ve turned it down because it meant giving the reigns to someone else. I’m not saying that I will never publish a sponsored post but when I do, it will be disclosed and it will be in line with my brand. I also think very highly of my readers and I am confident that they are smart people who can tell that my content is staged. Because, no, I do not have breakfast in bed like this every morning. If you would also like to read another opinion on this click here for some lolz.

*Millennials I do hope you get that reference because if you don’t SHAME ON YOU 😉

Winter Break Polarised

july1july2july3july4july5july6

Semester two is well underway which means back to the daily rumble of 6am wake ups, 4 hour back to back lectures and multiple cups of English breakfast and green tea. Regardless, I feel like I’m excited for the next 13 weeks but ask me again next week and the answer may be something different. Here’s a collection of pictures from my break :). I also wanted to mention that my previous every 3 day posting was kind of confusing so if you check SS often, check every Monday and Thursday (or Sunday and Wednesday depending on where you live) for a brand new spanking post

No Shaking Required (DIY Polaroids)

fakepolaroid4

We are all guilty of getting something new and then wanting something more. Except if you took the time to reflect, this greediness could be zapped (or at least leak out) from your system. I have a 365-day journal from Kikki-K that I write in every day. It’s a very healthy way of letting stuff out of your system or being thankful for what you’ve been able to do a particular day. Sometimes, I’ll just write a recipe down or attempt to write my name in different fonts. You don’t need to have an epic day for it to be worth recording because some of the best days are those lazy days where you don’t do anything but you appreciate everything. If you don’t think you have the enthusiasm to keep up a diary for that long, why not try do it just for the summer?

fakepolaroid8

If words aren’t your forte, then maybe photos are? I saw a quote once that constantly resonates with me: “The photographer takes photos of things they are afraid to lose.” This quote troubles me because of the nature of my blog and social media. I take so many pictures of myself and inanimate objects that the ‘afraid to lose’ part becomes weirdly egocentric!

I have also had another great internal conflict for far too long. That is whether to buy a Polaroid camera or not succumb to the trend. I’m just not cut out for leaving things to luck and with a Polaroid, that’s exactly what you have to do and I’m sorry but I’m just not hipster enough.

Wait … but here’s the thing, today I have a DIY that’s different and less mainstream so I guess I can just say I out hipstered all you hipsters. HA! The other day I realised I had never printed out any of my photos from high school. That’s six years of photographs that have never made it off my screen. That’s a lot of cringe …which leads me to my third and final installment of my New Year series: Reflection – a DIY.

fakepolaroid1

Start off by gathering all the pictures you want to use. Instagrams are the best because they’ve been squared already but by all means squarely crop all your other pictures and pop them into a folder.

Download Pixlr if you want to give your pictures that faded, timely, accidental look. I like my pictures brightly lit and sans filter but go ahead and filter that baby out till your heart desires. Pixlr in my opinion has the best filters but if you want to throw some better ones out into the ring, comment down below!

fakepolaroid2

Open Photoshop or Gimp (free but very powerful) and open a new file that is 4 x 6 in size (standard photo printing size). Then centre your photo and don’t be afraid to give it a lot of white space.

fakepolaroid3

Print your pictures out and trim to size. Then take a Sharpie and write the date, a song lyric, the location, whatever!

fakepolaroidgif1fakepolaroid9

Your fake Polaroid is good for all kinds of stuff. If you have heaps make an entire feature wall filled with them or hang them up on twine. I think printing off a whole stack, writing cute messages on the back and boxing them makes for a cute, personalised gift.

fakepolaroid6fakepolaroid7 No vanity mirror? No problem! I would much rather stare at my beautiful friends and family instead.

Summer Kind of Christmas

lately

Some of my favourite pictures are taken on my Instagram and even though a picture is meant to say a thousand words, I have a few hundred more to add in today’s post! I think I’m going to start doing these monthly, just to give my readers a monthly glimpse into what I’ve been up to starting with the above two shots.

Summer time is undisputedly my favourite season but this year, the magnitude of what it embodies has been multiplied by ten because I get to truly experience it all sans distractions. In the past, its always involved catching up with school work, reading for school, stressing to friends about school and staying indoors far too much. However this year, I’ve been lucky enough to finally be done with school (momentarily) and spend my summer by the sea and pool including Bronte Beach (on the left) and Magenta Shores (on the right). I have two and a half months left before summer ends and I intend to spend as much of it as possible outdoors so if you would like to see more of my daily snaps in real time, check out @stylesmorgasbord on Instagram.

I’ve also had a lot of fun creating flatlays to capture what I’ve been up. I finally received my L’s on Monday so I can learn to drive and I’ve also been getting into interior magazines lately, particularly Belle and Real Living. I’m working with WeWork in the new year to share my creative working space so I hope you guys are excited for January 2015 because the general theme will be fresh starts, getting organised and preparing yourself for a kicking year!

lately4lately3

One of the ultimate to do things on my bucket list include experiencing a white Christmas. When the weather is thirty degrees, snow angels, ugly sweater parties and hot chocolates topped with cream and mini marshmallows by the fire aren’t exactly practical. That being said, I have enough holiday cheer to rival Buddy The Elf so I still try to make the best of it anyway. So far, I’ve kick started my Christmas Cookie Bonanza with these amazing Lemon and Pistachio cookies; thrown a one person wrapping party featuring me and Pentatonix’s Christmas album: That’s Christmas To Me and decked the halls like a winter wonderland.

lately5

lately6Lastly, when I started Style Smorgasbord, I was quite apprehensive about the nature of blogging in this genre. It’s perceived as a bit vain, kind of staged and those who do it are bona fide narcissists who are fiscally irresponsible and live in a world of excess. I didn’t want this blog to define me as superficial. But then I realised I could redefine what kind of blog I am maintaining and my goal is to start integrating other aspects of what I am passionate about into my blog starting in 2015. I think I’ve also grown a lot this year and that has partly been thanks to the internet. It has really opened my eyes to issues that I was previously ignorant of and also taught me about the kind of privilege I am lucky to have and the power I hold to help the less privileged. So to anyone who’s ever thought that fashion is purely superficial, I hope I can prove you wrong.
